Labyrinthine Visions - by Chris Bilton

An intriguing and captivating look at the work of ROAR Member, Chris Bilton

Chris works in various mediums: ink, oils, acrylic, water colour, clay, wood, found objects, multimedia, photo manipulation and photography.

“In my artwork I hope to uncover my thoughts, emotions and truths about the world as I see it, a world that could not be expressed in mere words. it’s more than the mere rendering of a visual image, each time I see the scene I attempt to produce a presence, enriched with my personality, spirit and enthusiasm for the subject.

In my plein air paintings and drawings I try to capture the wild and hardy beauty of my native Yorkshire landscape and its wildlife, so when out and about I work quickly so as not to miss the sight, smells and sounds of the inspirational landscape.

I hope people can see my dreams made real and enjoy the journey into my own fantasy and imaginative musings, be it in wood, paint or pen.

I have a BA in English literature and theatre studies (1:1) which enables me to teach part time, and mentor/illustrate at the children’s literary charity Grimm & Co. I’m also a published author: short stories, novelettes, poetry and have had 12 plays performed on stage. “

More about Labyrinthine Visions

My pen and ink drawings are a mixture of weird and imaginative musings. The journey began 60 years ago in the margins of schoolbooks and has continued, with varying degrees of weirdness, from then on.

Influences have been many and varied, fantasy art, myths or just mindful moments. Dreams of strange happenings caught in the headlights of my imagination and allowing the subconscious to lead the way.

I am an instinctive artist, I try not to overthink my work, but at the same time my pen and ink drawings balance immediacy with a kind of controlled mayhem, hopefully making the observer aware of deeper layers, discovering more than they see at first sight.

I take calculated risks with my work, waltzing between reality and the unconscious state. This sense of freedom and unreality mingles with past experience funnelled into a 2 dimensional reality. I hope you enjoy the work as much as I did creating it.
