Greta Vilidaite
I am an oil painter, climber, walker and former neuroscientist based in Sheffield. I combine my knowledge of how the “visual brain” works with my love of the outdoors by using shapes, textures and light to direct the eye through my landscapes.
I began painting in 2019 to regain mental wellbeing after developing severe burnout at my previous job as a researcher, as well as to maintain my connection to the outdoors - in particular, mountains. With my art, I seek to strengthen the connection between humans and nature in order to preserve wild spaces and our own health.
As an avid outdoors-person, I have spent a large portion of my life seeking out stunning nature both within Yorkshire and beyond. In my paintings I aim to evoke feelings of wanderlust, freedom and adventure. I find the beautiful simplicity of life in the mountains, as well as in observing other life forms. Having been almost entirely self-taught in oil painting, my work is guided by a persistent yearning for a simpler life outside of day-to-day worries and obligations. This can be felt in my paintings of the countryside, wilderness and animals.
In 2022 I completed an ambitious project in which I completed an oil painting a day for 100 days. Currently I am working on a project capturing the lives of farm animals and their connection to humans, funded by Arts Council England.
