Heading to Painting En Plein Air: A 6-Week Skill Share Adventure

En Plein Air Adventure

Join us for an exciting six-week journey into the world of painting en plein air! This French term, which means "painting outdoors," captures the essence of creating art in the open air, inspired by nature and the changing light of the environment. Our Skillshare series will guide you through the essentials of plein air painting, from assembling the perfect art kit to mastering drawing and painting techniques. Each session is designed to build your confidence and skills, culminating in an outdoor painting experience and inclusion in various festivals we’re part of over the summer.

Week 1 - Wednesday 12th June @ 6pm: The Magic of the Perfect Art Kit with Matt Butt

Our journey begins with a sharing session focused on the art kit. Matt will introduce the essential tools and materials that make up a perfect art kit. Learn about the best pens, brushes, paper, clips, water holders, mediums, boxes, and palettes. Discover why certain tools are favored and how they enhance your creative process.

We will also have online kit makers who will provide their expert insights. By the end of this session, you'll have a clear understanding of what makes a great art kit, and you'll have the chance to creatively design your own perfect kit.

Week 2 - Wednesday 18th June @ 6pm: Kit Session with Matt Butt

Now that you know what makes a perfect art kit, it's time to personalise and create parts of your own. In this hands-on session, you'll have the opportunity to use our laser cutter to make custom parts for your art box. Share your developments and creations from the previous week and get feedback from Matt and fellow participants. This session is all about making your art kit truly yours.

Week 3 - Wednesday 26th June @ 6pm: Drawing 1 with Paul Evans

This week, we dive into the basics of drawing with Paul Evans. Understanding your tools and materials is crucial for effective drawing. Paul will guide you through basic shapes, forms, and line work, as well as shading and value techniques. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this session will provide a strong foundation in drawing.

Week 4 - Wednesday 3rd July @ 6pm: Drawing 2 with Paul Evans

Building on the previous session, Paul will teach gesture drawing and movement, perspective drawing, and composition and layout. These techniques are essential for capturing the dynamic and varied scenes you'll encounter while painting en plein air. By the end of this session, you'll be equipped with the skills to create compelling and well-composed drawings.

Week 5 - 10th July @ 6pm: Painting Basics with Lizzy Alageswaran

Lizzy Alageswaran takes the reins this week to introduce the basics of color and brushwork techniques. Learn about colour theory, mixing colours, and how to apply brushstrokes effectively. This session will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to transition from drawing to painting, setting you up for success in your plein air adventures.

Week 6 - 17th July @ 6pm: Painting Outside with Chris Slater

The culmination of our skill share series is an outdoor painting session with Chris Slater. You'll learn the essentials of working outside, from choosing a location to setting up your materials. Then, we'll head outdoors to apply everything we've learned over the past five weeks. This final session is a chance to immerse yourself in the plein air painting experience, capturing the beauty of the natural world in your art.
